Eva's Mother - Jessie (Clark) Norman 1878 - 1968 Part 1

Jessie Cynthia (Clark) Norman was born March 28, 1878 in Chippewa County, Minnesota.  Both of her parents had come from Maine and were married in Hastings, MN.







She was the oldest of five children born to Robert Holbrook Clark and Ella Frances Higgins.




According to her daughter Ruth, she & Levi J. Norman were married in Montevideo, MN June 5, 1894 at the Methodist Church. In her obituary from March 1968 it stated that soon after their marriage, she and Levi moved by covered wagon to Joseph, Oregon. They were back in Chippewa county by 1900, according to the 1900 census records.  In 1903 they moved to Parma, Idaho and 3 years later moved to Caldwell.  Then in August of 1908, Levi contracted Typhoid fever and died.  At that time shebecame a widowed woman at the age of 30 with 6 children to raise. She returned to Minnesota in 1910 for a short time with 3 of her older children, with the younger 3 staying at relatives homes. 1911 shows her living in Missoula, Montana where her brother was assistant cashier for the Western Montana National Bank.

 In 1914, while in Missoula, Jessie married Harry B. Hagerman,(The newspaper made a typo) but the marriage was short-lived.

Sometime between 1915 & 1918 Jessie moved 200 miles east to Spokane, Washington where she worked as a cashier for one of C. E. Stillwell's Theaters.

1918 was also the year she married Harry Whitman, a machinist from New York.




They stayed in Spokane a few years, then in 1923 they were in Portland, Oregon.  Jessie had a job as a glove maker, Harry a machinist.
